A loveable school cook from Ashford has been named the best school caterer in the country after winning a national award.

Mother-of-two Hazel Forrester made it to the final three in the Primary School Caterer of the Year category of the EDUcatering Excellence Awards after being nominated by her boss at the Contract Dining Company, Tracey Spellman.

At a black-tie award ceremony in London last week, Hazel walked away with the first prize. The 44-year-old said: “It was an amazing evening. I was feeling so nervous and when they called my name it took a second or two for it to sink in. I got a lovely award and a certificate and I am feeling over the moon.”

Hazel has worked at Godinton Primary School for 12 years. Earlier this year she helped transform the school’s canteen into a pirate’s cove, complete with a large mural of a pirate ship painted over the servery.

Head teacher Jim Holditch said: “It was lovely to see her in the spotlight on Monday and receiving the recognition she thoroughly deserves. “If you saw how she interacts with the children every day, and were aware of all of the work she has put into ensuring that the dinner hour is as enjoyable as possible for all of our children, then you would agree that the award has gone to the right person.”
