AN INVITING country pub in a glorious location has achieved another great accolade to add to its growing list.
The Duke of Cumberland, in Henley, has been listed inside the top 50 pubs in the country, and Simon Goodman, head chef and landlord at the pub, is looking forward to finding out exactly where it will rank.
“I’m quite shocked,” said Simon.
“I think it is quite an achievement, and it’s really nice to hear good news, especially when we are in a recession.
“Last year the winner was a pub with two Michelin stars, and one of Heston Blumenthal’s pubs was listed,” he said.
Among a number of other awards, the pub won the Good Food Guide Pub of the Year in 2012, and in 2010 Simon was named UK Pub Chef of the Year.
“It’s nice because the people voting are chefs, food writers and critics,” said Simon.
Simon has been a chef since the age of 14.
He is now 33.
“I’ve always worked locally, and I try to use as much produce from the local area as possible,” he said.
The food is ‘rustic and simple’, which Simon says will ‘continue to pull people into local pubs’.
Simon will find out where the pub ranks on Monday. January 28.
